What My Girls Are Reading -

Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him - Maya Angelou

Since we made our reading chart, we've been stacking up the books and getting ready to track them on the chart.  And we're off to a good start!

Gulliver Mickey:  Disney's Wonderful World of Reading.

I was thrilled when I found this book at a "Friends of the Library" book sale.  I remember reading this book as a child and was so excited to be able to share it with my girls.  This cute book retells the classic story of "Gulliver's Travels" in true Disney fashion - with Mickey Mouse in the main role as Gulliver.  As in the classic book, Mickey quickly becomes friends with the tiny villagers and in the end, they help him find his way back home.  Nani loves this book and Nudgie loves looking at the pictures, pointing to Mickey on every page.

Aladdin: The Genie's Tale

Can you tell we were on a bit of a Disney kick?  This book retells the story of Aladdin and Jasmine, but from the perspective of the Genie.  While I, personally, found the book tedious and boring, Nani just loved it and wanted to read it over and over.  Nudgie, as always, just enjoyed looking at the pages while I tried to get her to say "Genie"

Apples, Apples, Apples

Cut-paper illustrations trace this educational tale of a bunny family's outing to an orchard and its aftermath. Tidbits of useful information on apple culture, from selected varieties and their uses to planting, are sprinkled throughout the book.  You learn that the apple is actually a member of the rose family and discover the parts of an apple when the farmer cuts one in half. Later, when the bunny family returns home, they are treated to applesauce (a recipe is included!)  Also included are instructions for making apple prints.  I really wanted to try the apple prints with the girls, but once I started to cut the apples, they decided they wanted them for a snack instead!

And finally, my personal pick of the week!

Gone With The Wand

"If yours truly, Edith Molarnari, tooth fairy second class, hadn't seen it with my own two peepers, I wouldn't have believed it myself --- Bernice Sparklestein, once the best fairy godmother in the biz, having a bad wand day. A very bad wand day."   Didn't you ever wonder what happens to a fairy godmother when she loses her powers?  Well this adorable book gives you a little peek into that very question.

The story was cute and the little fairy godmothers were so sweet I just wanted to squeeze them.  The different fairy "jobs" that the fairy godmother tries out range from snow fairy to sugarplum fairy and more.  Each one ends with hilarious results and she keeps trying until she finally finds the right job for her.  The pictures were colorful as well and added so much to the story.  I LOVED this book and both Nani and Nudgie giggled from beginning to end!

So what have you read this week?

Thanks for sharing your picks. Gone with the Wand sounds really hilarious, I am adding it to my Evernote.
