Eat, Shop, Clean?

>> Friday, August 7, 2009

So, after my pity party yesterday morning, I got a lot of hugs & support from my little blog community. Thanks everyone for the pick-me-ups! Shortly afterwards, I decided to put on my big girl panties and just deal with it. Usually, my way of "dealing with it" is to either eat, shop, or clean.

Eat? Yeah, that was pretty tempting -- especially with this sitting on my kitchen counter.

Shop? Shopping is what got me into this whole mess to begin with. As much as I feel the urge to go shopping at Old Navy for yet another black v-neck tshirt...I couldn't shop because....well....I'm broke and I know that as a recovering shopaholic, this would be an extremely dangerous time for me.

Clean? Well, overall the house isn't too bad -- if you turn a blind eye to this....

or this.....

So, I found other alternatives.......

Thanks to a post I found over at The Snail's Trail, Nani & I did this cute little craft yesterday afternoon.

After naptime, I heard giggling & laughter from behind my loveseat and caught this moment on film.

Then this morning, I met a dear friend of mine for storytime at Barnes & Noble (with free cookie afterwards!) and then went to the spray park down the street.

I don't know about you, but how can you be down when God has given me this.....

A Jail of My Own Making

>> Thursday, August 6, 2009

I had the strangest dream last night. It was a wierd dream. I went to jail. By my own choice.

I remember bits and pieces of the dream. Being at the computer and doing something on the computer - in what seemed to be a gesture of turning myself in online - and then just sitting there and waiting for the police to show up at my door a few minutes later to take me away. I remember looking at My Marine and saying that I have to do this and that it's for my own good. I remember telling him that he had to call a friend of ours to help with the girls while I was gone - which was only going to be for 45 days. (45 days?) I remember the "jail" being more of a glorified dormitory where I basically did some hard labor and was able to see my family every once in awhile.

Why did I have this dream?

I'm certainly no expert on dream interpretation, I'm sure I can give you my interpretation. I've been so incredibly out of sorts lately. I feel like I've got the weight of the world on my shoulders. Our finances are so out of whack and we just had an unexpected car repair earlier this week to the tune of $667 that pretty much wiped us out until our next pay period.

Yes, we have debt. Yes, we live paycheck to paycheck. No, we really don't have much of a savings cushion - not any more, not in this economy. Yes, I stress every single day about paying bills, putting food on the table, stretching every single little thing so that it lasts just a little bit longer.

My worries and stresses have put me into an emotional jail -- a jail of my own making. I can't get through the day without thinking about the upcoming bills and where we're going to get the cash to pay for them.

Sure, I can hear it now -- well, why don't you go get a job? Sure, I could do that. But you figure out daycare for two kids on a paycheck of minimum wage and what's left wouldn't even get me a cup of coffee and a danish.

The worst part is that I feel that because I'm a failure when it comes to our finances that somehow that makes me a bad person, a bad wife, and a bad mom. If I can't get a hold of something so simple as money and debt management (and it really is a simple concept if you boil it down to the basics), how can I be a good person. I look around and all my other friends seem to have it together. And I know that the situation we're in is my fault.

You see, I'm a recovering compulsive shopper. It's a real, deep-seated problem that I deal with every single day. It was at it's worst right after I first got married and was living in a state other than my homestate, with no family, while My Marine was gone 9 months out of the year. I shopped to fill the void - the loneliness, the anger, the sadness. I'm still paying for those mistakes - and now that I have kids, I struggle every day with not falling into that trap of shopping for them.

But I'm trying to be positive. I'm trying so hard to keep the faith that God will provide - somehow, someway, He will provide. I'm trying to remember all the good that I have right now -- I have two beautiful, healthy girls, My Marine has a job, we have a roof over our head, a vehicle that now works, and food in our fridge.

If I focus on that every day, instead of stressing about my bank balance every single hour of the day, then maybe, just maybe, I can break free of this emotional jail that I find myself in and dreaming about at night.

Encouragement - Army Style!

>> Tuesday, August 4, 2009

Today's BlogHop is about encouragement, I just had to share this little picture of "encouragement".

On Saturday, I took the girls to watch the Colorado Army National Guard Special Ops do their quarterly training. It was amazing to watch these fearless men jump with blind faith. But this one photo - of an instructor's hand on a soldier's shoulder - shows just a simple gesture of encouragement. With one touch, he tells that soldier - you're ok, you CAN do this!

This week's Blog Hop is your favorite quote, spiritual passage , life lesson, saying, PHOTO or encouraging thought. Post your favorite or most meaningful, and then include a sentence or two about what it means to you personally, and how it can encourage other people in their lives.

Our Saturday with the Colorado Army National Guard Special Ops.....

>> Saturday, August 1, 2009

This morning, I got up early and drove the girls to see their daddy in action. He was flying in support of the Colorado Army National Guard Special Operations para-drop training that they did today.

I have to admit that I've never seen a para-drop before -- but this was pretty freakin' cool! Here are some pictures and about a 20-second video of the flyover they did.

In light of baby Stellan's recent hospitalization, My Marine took this photo this morning to show our support and prayer for MckMama and her precious baby!

Like Mother, Like Daughter

>> Tuesday, July 28, 2009

My mother sent me a box full of my old dance costumes. For Nani - it was like Christmas had come early!

She asked me if she could play dress-up, and I happily let her. I watched her pull out costume after costume -- each one holding a special memory for me. I heard "Mommy, look!" and looked over to see her wearing the costume from my very first dance recital -- I was 5 years old. I took a picture of her -- and then dug around until I found a picture of me at that age in the same costume.

Aaahhh....memories!!

In the meantime, I'm almost 100% completely recovered from whatever illness decided to hold me in it's grip for almost three weeks. I actually had the energy to get up this morning and workout! My journey back is slow -- but I'm working hard not to let it get the best of me!

There's some new fun out in Blogland -- It's the Blog Hop! Hosted by MckMama and Brent Riggs, it's the latest thing for visiting other blogs and see what others are doing!

Mom Down! Mom Down!

>> Tuesday, July 21, 2009

This is going to be short & sweet and it will probably drain whatever energy I have left in my body.

It's been a week since my last post. It probably was the longest week of my life. My Marine's deployment didn't even feel this long.

I've been sick....very, very sick. Fever, chills, nose that either won't stop running or is so stuffed up that I sound like Lou Rawls trying to do an Elmer Fudd imitation. And the cough - don't get me started on the cough. I think I left a part of my lung back in the Safeway last week. On top of it all, my Marine was gone all last week for his annual training -- which means that it was just me, a box of Kleenex, and the girls.

The girls - who were feeling 100% better after the parasites that invaded their body decided to make a new home in mine.

The girls - who wanted to play with mommy, climb all over mommy, read with mommy ever single waking moment - when all I wanted to do was lay on the couch and curse my Marine.

The girls - who didn't understand that mommy is sick because moms don't get sick. Don't you know that? It's in the mommy manual.

I'm finally starting to feel a little better now, but I'm still so freakin' exhausted that I could probably fall asleep...............zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.............

Sorry about that.....

I know I still need to pick a winner from my book giveaway, so stay tuned for that. Now I'm off to take another dose of vitamin C, throw some clothes on and take Nani to ballet class -- because, even though mommy is sick, the world must still move on....

Whatever Happened to Grandma & Grandpa?

>> Tuesday, July 14, 2009

I was going to wait and post this tomorrow, but I just couldn't help myself. This was too good not to share right away!!

As I was driving Nani to ballet class this morning, my mind started to wander off. This is a dangerous thing for me (and not because I could potentially run a red light) because this is the time where I sometimes come up with some of my blogging ideas. My mind swirls with "what if's" and "why is its?". This morning was one of those mornings.

Whatever happened to calling grandparents simply "Grandma" and "Grandpa"? Once upon a time, it was an honored thing to be called "Grandma" or "Grandpa". It marked yet another phase in your long, well-lived life. Grandparents rejoiced when they received the notification of their first grandchild -- proudly announcing to the ladies at bingo that my son/daughter has finally made me a "Grandma!"

Photobucket

These days, things have changed. Being called a grandma has some negative associations -- old ladies with false teeth, grey hair, bifocals, house dresses and slippers. Being called Grandpa is associated with suspenders, grumpiness, wrap-around sunglasses, golf hats & plaid pants. (Sorry daddy -- if you're reading this, I know you don't wear plaid pants! Ha! Ha!). Grandparents around the world are rebelling against the age-old, time-honored "Grandma" and "Grandpa" in favor of more hip, age-defying monikers.

Now, there are still a few clinging to tradition, like my parents who are lovingly called "Bubbe" and "Grandpap"....although Nani used to call my dad "Bock-Bock" (like the sound a chicken makes) because she couldn't say "Grandpap". Deep down, I know my daddy LOVED it!

Photobucket

My in-laws are using "Nana" and "Pappy".

Photobucket

But there are those who insist on being called Meemaw, MeeMee, Maymay and Mawmaw. (E-I, E-I, O)

I've heard kids call their grandfathers Bumbo, Bumbum, Geegaw, and Boompa. (Sounds like the sounds that a one-man band makes walking down the street....remember Bert from Mary Poppins?)

Photobucket

But wait -- there's more! I decided that this called for some serious research. I stumbled upon
some great jewels out in cyberspace. Some are cute and some are.....well.....you just judge for yourself! (I have also added my own little commentaries....I just couldn't pass this stuff up!)

Auntie-Gramma: because I married my stepmother's brother and we bred. So now my stepmother is both an aunt and a grandma. (This is a little disturbing on SO many levels!)

Alvin and Butter-butt: My daughters started calling my father Alvin because they thought he had puffy cheeks like Alvin the singing chipmunk. They call my mother butter-butt because while they were camping, she backed into a trash basket and got a butter wrapper stuck on her butt. (Butter-butt must be a barrel of laughs come New Year's Eve!)

Banana and Papaya - We came up with this for our granddaughter when her other grandparents stole Mimi and Popi from us! (Not only do you have to worry about baby name stealing - we have to worry about grandparent name stealing too? Hmmm...maybe we should start calling my parents Avacado & Cantaloupe?)

Diva: I want the new grandkid to call me "Diva" because I think Diva sounds young & fun. I may not be young, but I'm fun! Grandma is old & gray, not young & fun.

Gaggy: We called out maternal grandfather,"Gaggy", because my sister could not pronounce "Grandpa". All the grandkids following said"Gaggy": He officially became "Mr. Gaggy " to the neighbors. (Seriously? Do you want your kids hanging out with "Mr. Gaggy" in your neighborhood?? This guy sounds like he should be on some kind of federal watch list...)

GoneGone: My grandma's name. I don't know why, but all the grandkids and great-grandkids called her that. (Grandpa must have been called ByeBye)

Grammbo: My brother-in-law nicknamed my mother Grammbo after she emerged from the woods after a solo backpacking trip, wearing a bandanna around her head. (And a deer head tucked under her arm....)

Photobucket

Grandma and Grandfather:
My paternal grandparents have always been "Grandma and Grandfather". I'm not sure why, but my eldest cousin started calling them Grandma and Grandfather, and we've all done it, except one pair of cousins whose mother insisted that it should be "Grandmother and Grandfather" or "Grandma and Grandpa". I think her kids use Grandpa. (Anyone who uses the words "paternal" and "eldest" must not have much imagination...here's a family that sticks to tradition!)

Grandma Goddess: My granddaughter calls me Grandma Goddess, which doesn't please "the other women" (her other grandma). (Hmmm....must be why she now calls herself "Diva" -- see grandma post above)

Grandma Meow: My son began calling my mother-in-law, Grandma Meow since he couldn't say her first name, Mary. It's also funny because she owns multiple cats. (Getting treats from this Grandma is always a surprise! Is it kitty litter or trail mix?)

Photobucket

Grandma - San Diego and Grandma - Tucson
We called our grandmas by their geographical locations since they could both be called grandma! (Let's hope we don't have to change it to Grandma Retirement Home)

Granny Grunt: This is the name we gave to our Great Grandmother, my Mother's grandmother. She was short and stout and every time she stood up or sat down, or did just about anything, she grunted. One of my cousin's teasingly called her this one time and it stuck. (Just about anything?? Hmmmm.....)

Kinky & Pa: My maternal grandparents were called Pa and Kinky! I think someone tried to call her by her name, Carina, and Kinky came out and stuck. She was known to our whole town as Kinky or Aunt Kinky. (I'm seriously not going to touch this one with a 10-foot pole.....not even the one that's probably in Kinky's bedroom!)

Photobucket

Lolli & Pop:
My Mother-in-law chose the following names for herself and my Father-in-Law to be called by their grandchildren: She is: Lolli He is: Pop Get it? Lolli-Pop.... Just makes me roll my eyes every time I think about it!!! (Ba-dum-dum)

In the end, no matter what your children call their grandparents, they will always be loved and cherished and will have memories to last a lifetime!

Blog Hop Tuesday - Three Things You Didn't Know About Me

Today's Blog Hop theme is "Three Things You Didn't Know About Me". To participate, share three deep dark secrets about yourself. (Ok, so they don't have to be deep & dark....but it is fun to share, isn't it?)

1) I received a college scholarship for Eastern European folk dancing. I've been doing it since I was 9 years old and because of my scholarship, I travelled all over this beautiful country of mine doing 2-hr. performances. Thanks to my folk dancing experiences - I have friends all over the country and world! (As well as bad knees & ankles! LOL!)

2) My celebrity encounters include meeting the band members of Whitesnake and Poison in a Wendy's when I was in college; Dr. Phil at a convention that I helped organize, and former Vice President Dick Cheney

3) I once appeared on an episode of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood when I was 16 using said dancing skills learned from #1

So, there it is people! Mock me or praise me as you see fit!
